What is the purpose of the ~~Locket and Knife?~~ I encountered them but opted not to pick them up because they quite clearly weren't for me.

As a somewhat related aside, finally making it to the endgame and walking in on ~~the almost exact replica of Toriel's house~~ hit me surprisingly hard. That's probably the exact moment where the game moved into unbelievably awesome territory.

It really works in this case because you have to spend the whole game really working hard to not only overcome these people's attempts to kill you for what amounts to a pretty good reason for them, but then forgiving them for it and THEN trying to help them come out of their various shells afterward.

You experience the dorky and awkward phase of people tentatively almost afraid to express themselves at first, and then things slowly get more natural with each in their own ways, and then by the time you're in final boss god challenging mode it's like well of course these people have my back, I've worked to show them I'm a good friend and they opened up to me in response.

tl;dr having to put that effort in as a player makes you feel less like it's cheesy when shit goes down later
