Actually, I'd say no filter at all looks best.

Sadly, no matter what I try, so-called CRT filters never look like the real thing. It's why I still keep a CRT around with my SNES hooked up to it.
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)21:37 No.136658352
Better yet, just hook up your computer to a real CRT TV. For those that don't know, SNES and Sega Genesis games look worse than they used to if you're playing on a LCD monitor with no filters. The sprites were made with (low-resolution) CRT monitors and CRT TV's in mind, and they look better when you play them on the TV they were intended for.
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)21:38 No.136658383

The CRT shader gives it the scanlines it needs to look good, because that's how it was meant to be seen.

Thing is, if you do that, you won't get the intended scanlines, and instead you'll get a flickery interlaced picture. AFAIK, modern video cards cannot output the non-interlanced resolution of old game consoles. You would probably need some dedicated hardware to do that.

ZSNES is shit as far as accuracy goes actually. The sound on Earthworm Jim 2 doesn't even play properly on that and if it does, it's probably because the ROM is hacked to death. Some games just speed up unnaturally as well.

If you want something closer to the real deal, try the new SNES9x (which has been rewritten completely) or SNESGT (doesn't play zipped files though). BSNES if your system's beefy enough for it.

You'd be quite surprised about the games ZSNES doesn't handle too well without graphic or speed hacks. It's embarrassing.

>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:00 No.136660540
Yep, this is why I stopped using ZSNES. The only reason to ever use it is if you only play the most popular SNES games (as those were the ones given most attention to) and have been using it for years and are too used to it to switch, or if you have a computer from the 90's.

I honestly cannot recommend it to anyone downloading an SNES emulator for the first time, even if it "just works" or if works well enough or whatever excuse ZSNES fans throw out.

>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:00 No.136660551
hey op; before you play any of these games you might want to do some research. for example, chrono trigger has an expanded version with more content on the DS. playing the SNES versoin would be playing the inferior version. this is true of many games listed.

>Meanwhile, bsnes recently hit 100% accuracy barring emulation of factory defects.

>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:03 No.136660801

The SNES version has higher resolution and better color than you'd get on the DS version. Really, the best option would be to patch the new content into the PSX version, and use the Japanese code to run it (the western release actually emulated the Japanese ROM and ran a text replacement hooker on top of it, which is what led to the horrible slowdown).
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:04 No.136660938
Meanwhile, BSNES is a horribly optimized piece of shit that requires absurd resources for emulation of a 4 MHz CPU. I'll stick with something I can actually run and has a nice interface thank you.

>horribly optimized

But that's wrong, the reason it uses so much system resources is that it emulates everything as perfectly as possible. Also, the Compatibility and Performance build have significant optimizations at the expense of a small amount of accuracy. Speed of the SNES CPU doesn't mean anything, it's synchronizing them so that the timing is proper is what takes up CPU time.

>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:12 No.136661712

It's not so much horribly optimized as it is focused on low level emulation and synchronizing at every point. If it dropped synchro it'd be less accurate, and implementing high level techniques while maintaining accuracy is a pain in the ass, and would reduce portability.

TL;DR: You can have it done fast, or you can have it done right.

Oh shit. Well, sometimes the website is down too...

In any case, all did was matchmaking: setting up players without going through the hassle of putting in IP addresses. Hopefully someone can just redirect to a new server if it's really down for good.

It's funny really. I grew up with the SNES version of the game and as such can't even stand the Genesis version's music. I imagine it's a similar situation for people that grew up with the Genesis version.

Anyone remember watching the cartoon?
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:25 No.136663069
Grew up with the Genesis version myself, agree that the SNES music is infinitely superior.
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:26 No.136663106
Japan only Satellaview horseshit. You didn't even play as Link in it and a lot of stuff was based on the time of day or something like that. There's a few rom hacks that make it more playable though.
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:27 No.136663201

It's a Satellaview game. The system broadcast games from a satellite and you could play them if you had the receiver. Shit was super expensive, though, and most of the content on the service is thought to be lost forever.
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:27 No.136663241
It was only a remake in a very loose way. It followed the basic structure of the original game, but it still had various differences, mostly having to do with dungeons and the timer mechanics. It was only released on a Japan-only attachment for the SNES called the Satellaview. The game is called BS Legend of Zelda.

If you want to play it, there's a site that has a fixed-up ROM for it.

You may want to check out Kodai no Sekiban on that page. It's based on ALttP, but it's kind of a sequel to it, not a remake.

Why? I agree it wasn't quite as good, but it was still a very solid game overall. Although the music was kinda grating for the most part, bar a few gems.
>> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)22:34 No.136663892
This. About half the music in X3 was pretty lame, but the other half kicked ass. Sure it wasn't -quite- as good as the first two games, but it's still a great game. Beats the hell out of those awful Playstation X games.

I liked X4 personally. Not among my favorites, but I found it solid. The one I never could get into for the life of me was X5. It was just so unremarkable. X6, as awfully designed as it was, was at least challenging and had kick-ass music.

Yes, I'm saying I liked X6 over X5.

But no, the level design just drops significantly in value, bosses are less interesting, and other things I have an opinion on.

even the one with diminished level design and the other one where Zero was an incomplete character getting "double jump" from a boss, and that one with the horrible bosses like high max and gate who had either glitchy or needlessly frustrating patterns and attacks?

Aside from a few cases of retarded as fuck stage design (Gigabolt Man-O-War/Earthrock Trilobite), X8 was the only Mega Man X to come close to X4 in quality. The boss fights, aside from Earthrock, were some of the best in the series too.
