By year 2050 we'll be able to download our minds into computers.

Think about it /v/. You won't need your biological body, your mind can exist in a virtual world in a database.

You will literally never die, living until the end of time itself in an artificial heaven. Why aren't more people discussing this?

You got it a little wrong.

Those weren't recorded dreams. The test subjects were shown dozens of YouTube videos and then the clips from the video. It all were mixed up in the pictures of the thoughts.

You also got the second thing wrong. We know neutrinos since "forever" but a few months ago they were observed being faster than light. The scientists at CERN checked and researched everything until they were sure they didn't make a mistake. Then they told everybody about it which was two days ago.

I don't think everyone appreciates the gravity of this dream thing.

If someone manages to lucid dream in one of these things, they can create their own world.

If this happens, we are literally only limited by our imaginations: we could create entire shows and movies with our own minds, and have this machine record them.

What interests me is what the limit of what you can do with lucid dreaming is: can we create animated characters? Will we need to, since we can defy the laws of this world? What about camera work, will that be possible from the person dreaming it? Lucid-dream film creator could feasibly become a real job, with people entering induced sleep to create scenes of a film in their minds.

Of course, the flip side of this: there's gonna be, like, a million video adaptations of Twilight fanfictions posted to "dreamtube". Still worth it, though.

I stand by my opinion on this and also cloning and teleportation based on reconstructing your body from blueprint.
Imo in any of these cases, resulting "you" is not "You". What I mean is how your awareness and perception doesn't carry over. Even if person's mind can be quantified and digitized, it will be just a fresh copy living inside the Network with your personality and memories, technically not being you. You die the moment you step into the teleporter. You are disintegrated, taken apart atom by atom. And then your perfect copy is reconstructed on the other end. Other people will never, ever notice a thing. But you will die and new you will live.

It's a thought I have had, the most worrying thing is it's impossible to test for, you don't know that your life ceased until you try the teleporter and no longer experience anything, and your perfect clone who has all your old memories believes himself to be the one who stepped into the teleporter, and would proclaim that it works and that he was the one perceiving the world both before and after the teleport.

WE ARE ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH HERE.

Yes, teleportation or GITS style cyberization would just result in a doppleganger that claimed the technology worked as advertised and would probably believe it did.

They would be no different than rachele in blade runner who has all the same memories as tyrell's niece.

The only possible way to find out if you really DID die when using one of these technologies would be to experience it yourself.

Obviously this is just too much of a risk since you couldn't trust the testimony of anyone else who had experienced it.
also: to paraphrase Doctor Manhattan "a live human and a dead human have the same number of molecules in their body"

There's no guarantee you would even survive the trip. A lifeless corpse might just flop onto the floor on the other side of the teleporter.

No. Stop believing this bullshit. That, is impossible though, and the scientists know it. What the fuck? What am I proving here? The information I stated is all part of the fucking news that's being released to the public.

>Think about those 18 million seconds of random videos as a painter's color palette. A painter sees a red rose in real life and tries to reproduce the color using the different kinds of reds available in his palette, combining them to match what he's seeing. The software is the painter and the 18 million seconds of random video is its color palette. It analyzes how the brain reacts to certain stimuli, compares it to the brain reactions to the 18-million-second palette, and picks what more closely matches those brain reactions. Then it combines the clips into a new one that duplicates what the subject was seeing. Notice that the 18 million seconds of motion video are not what the subject is seeing. They are random bits used just to compose the brain image.

>>Notice that the 18 million seconds of motion video are not what the subject is seeing. They are random bits used just to compose the brain image.

The "brain image" videos are just a mash-up of existing videos. This is still pretty damn cool, but not nearly as cool as if they were raw rips from the mind.

As for the speed of light.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15017484

>But the group understands that what are known as "systematic errors" could easily make an erroneous result look like a breaking of the ultimate speed limit.

>That has motivated them to publish their measurements.

>"My dream would be that another, independent experiment finds the same thing - then I would be relieved," Dr Ereditato told BBC News.

>But for now, he explained, "we are not claiming things, we want just to be helped by the community in understanding our crazy result - because it is crazy".

Right from the scientists themselves. No scientist worth his salt is going to try to turn over GR and SR just because one set of experiments doesn't agree with it. There is FAR FAR FAR more supporting evidence that SR and GR are, for the most part, right. You'd need a lot more than neutrinos to prove it wrong.

Um, sorry, scientific theories must be falsifiable.

You pretty much stated the opposite.

Right from the scientists themselves. No scientist worth his salt is going to try to turn over GR and SR just because one set of experiments doesn't agree with it. There is FAR FAR FAR more supporting evidence that SR and GR are, for the most part, right. You'd need a lot more than neutrinos to prove it wrong.

thats not how theories work. theories are usually taken as fact because after exhaustive testing they still hold true. the moment a test disagrees with a theory (assuming the test was done properly which they are still looking into) then the theory is false

>I'm not sure you know what you're talking about.
Anything ANYTHING with mass cannot go faster than the speed of light. It's that fucking simple. Guess what neutrinos have.
If it was so easy to say they're going faster than the speed of light then the scientists would not be *ASKING FOR HELP*. Yeah that's right, they even said that's why they went public. They know this can't be right so they want others to help them find out why they get the *RESULTS* they got. The results don't prove anything. Fuck, they don't even know if it's an error or not, which they also said themselves. (See: >>111290758).

>>111290868
And? Just because it needs to be falsifiable doesn't mean that you need to throw it out when one thing doesn't agree with it.

Except we have LITERALLY just fucking RECORDED that happening.

Theories are meant to be broken, that's science.

No, that's not how it works. In fact it's not how it's ever worked. This isn't the first time something hasn't played nice with the laws of physics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole_information_paradox

For us average people. http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/string-theory-and-the-black-hole-information-parad.html

>The problem with this is that quantum mechanics is built on the idea that information can’t be lost. If information can be lost, then quantum mechanics isn’t a secure theoretical structure. Hawking, as a relativist, was more concerned with maintaining the theoretical structure of general relativity, so he was okay with the information being lost if it had to be.

>The reason that this lost information is such a major issue for quantum mechanics once again ties into thermodynamics. In quantum mechanics, information is related to the thermodynamic concept of “order.” If information is lost, then order is lost — meaning that entropy (disorder) is increased. This means that the black holes would begin generating heat, rising up to billions of billions of degrees in mere moments. Though Leonard Susskind and others realized this in the mid-1980s, they couldn’t find the flaws in Hawking’s reasoning that would prove him wrong.

This is why they published. Right now they're not certain, as there could easily be an error in their experiment. Once they get consistent results from multiple independent parties we can start to say "Oh shit, it goes faster than light".

No, they recorded SOMETHING happening that suggests that such a thing is occuring, but the scientists DO
NOT
KNOW
IF
THAT
IS
ACTUALLY
HAPPENING
OR
NOT

Do I need to say it again? THEY DO NOT KNOW. THEY HAVE SAID THEY DO NOT KNOW. THEY HAVE SAID IT COULD BE AN ERROR.

And again, you know why they went public? I won't even tell you, I'll just fucking quote them.

>"We wanted to find a mistake - trivial mistakes, more complicated mistakes, or nasty effects - and we didn't.

>"When you don't find anything, then you say 'well, now I'm forced to go out and ask the community to scrutinise this'."

Aka
>We don't know what the fuck is going on and we need more help.

but hawkings idea that information is lost in a black hole isnt a fact, we have no way of testing it. its basically his idea around a problem, it shouldnt even be considered a theory and many physicists dont agree with it
>> Anonymous 09/24/11(Sat)02:35 No.111291764
Maybe you people who remark about the theoretical possibility that a particle could move faster than light should realize that before relativity and quantum physics there was only Newtonian laws, which were horribly flawed and thought to be the summary of all physics. Science is a process and what we know now is not the endpoint of its timeline.

That something indicates something else, perhaps do to an observer effect, does not instantly mean it is wrong. They will attempt to see if they can prove the theory using negation, but if that fails it will surely need a more complex and profound re-examination of physics as it is now.
