Let's talk about Over the Garden Wall.
God damn I just finished watching and I loved it. I was worried its hype would make me expect more than it could deliver but..damn.
What are your thoughts on the show? Any part you enjoyed most?

The second episode with Pottersdam and Enoch was honestly my favorite episode.

Going to make some hot apple cider and watch the whole thing back to back again this weekend.

Just re-watched this yesterday, my favorite part is the music. By a wide margin.

There aren't any songs that are bad. The weakest one is in Greg's dream and even that one's solid.

so its not confirmed or anything, but im a big fan of the "three witch sisters" all being baba yaga
where the evil seeming aunty whispers was the good one
the good seeming greg dream sister was evil
and the stitch witch was just a neutral cunt, since she removes all choice from her "kids"

I like to think the Unknown is still a real place, but it exists on a different sort of plane. And you can't get there by getting lost on purpose. If it all existed in Wirt's mind then we wouldn't have been shown the Woodsman's daughter, since he didn't know about her.

I kind of wish Wirt had died. I really like Wirt, but having him get stuck back in the Unknown right after saving Greg from the lake would have been nifty.
Maybe have a last scene of him sitting on the porch of Beatrice's house and looking content as he tells Beatrice he's waiting for Greg but jokes that he doesn't want Greg to come back too soon.

It was a coming of age type of deal for him though. He had to confront the Sarah thing for his development to be complete.
Beatrice should have become the Woodman's surrogate daughter though, instead of his actual daughter coming back for no reason.

Beatrice already had a family, though. They could have just opened their home to the Woodsman and made him part of the family, though. He'd probably be cool to have around once he came to terms with the whole beast incident.
I wonder what got Beatrice pissed enough to throw a rock at a bluebird?

Wirt was born a girl but he feels like he doesn't have any gender. He identifies as a boy during the show and only feels more comfortable exploring outside the two normal genders once Greg gets obnoxious about being (while having been born a boy) whatever gender he feels like at the moment. Greg shows Wirt genderoftheday and genderofthenight which post a new wacky gender every day! Today's gender: this makes actual transgender people look like jokes to people outside of tumblr

Greg is so happy wacky gender blog and Wirt is mostly spooky wacky gender blog but just the harmless/mild wacky genders like a bunch of shadowy cats and I didn't click on the other because this is stupid.

Beatrice was born intersex and her parents raised her as a boy but feels like she's a girl. She's depressed for no reason really but unrelated to feeling like a girl. She met Adelaide before she became a bird because witches = doctors and she thought Adelaide could medicate her for her depression.

Speaking of mental health issues, Wirt and Greg are both autistic. Wirt has social anxiety and is psychotic and Sara is autistic too and type 2 bipolar (hypomania/depression type) (^: (and born a boy while uhh questioning her gender? girl.)

Here, I am forumlingual:

Wirt was determined female at birth but identifies as male and wants to explore his gender since Greg is dabbling in genderfluidity... Wirt is Asexual... Uh... Genderoftheday and Genderofthenight are blogs, don't bother visiting them. Bea was born intersex but determined male, has depression... Um... Autism reigns... And Sara was determined male at birth but loosely considers herself a girl. WHEW.

That was gross and now I feel dirty

I'm going to post some tumblr headcanons that were unoffensive to make it hurt less:
>Wirt goes with Greg to the pet shop to get thungs for Jason Funderberker’s habitat. There, they buy little figurines that look like the people they met in the Unknown
>wirt’s favorite band was the beatles for a little too long.
>Greg seems like he’d be treated as the weird kid at school who does some pretty random stuff. Like he’d be the type to come to school with worms in his pockets, and everyone’s just “There goes Greg with his worms,” but what they don’t know is he picks up those worms on the way to school so they won’t dry out on the sidewalk. It’s his way of rescuing them.
>Wirt gets too flustered when he first kisses Sara that she offers to let him practice with an m&m taped to a mirror
>someone comments offhandedly on how wirt uses that hat to cover up a formidable rat’s nest
>but then he walks by and hears them and is just like: “bird’s nest, actually” and removes his hat and beatrice is comfortably nestled on top of his head, fast asleep
>Wirt becomes an architect
>one day, when he’s old enough, greg will join marching band….
>(he will play tuba/sousaphone ofc)

I could never get into The Beatles. They have a few songs that I like, but most of their music does nothing for me.

Which is really weird considering I'm a HUGE fan of both Queen and They Might Be Giants, both of whom were massively influenced by The Beatles, and are frequently compared to them. But like, they're both inspired by The Beatles in opposite ways, like they both started at The Beatles and ran in opposite directions, so logically, The Beatles are a combination of my two favorite bands of all time, and yet, I still can't get into them.

I'm sure people have thought about it better than I did, as I just finished the series and am really half assing this, but the whole "if dreams can't come true, then why not pretend" part of the intro song plays over the rock and then in the outro "dancing in the swirl of golden memories, the loveliest lies of all" is sung over the rock again. And the rock literally being the last frame of the series.

Nah, in the beginning she is shown gazing into the woods. The most robust theory is that she wandered into the woods (or was lured) and the Woodsman went looking for her. The Woodsman was fooled by the Beast into believing that she'd died, and this sent him on his mission of wandering about looking for the trees to cut down for oil. The Beast mentions that the Woodman doesn't want to return to the empty home, and we know that he lives at the mill where Beatrice's family once lived. So the Woodsman has never returned home. Meanwhile, his daughter has found her way out of the forest and has been living at the house the whole time. She was nowhere near as valuable as the Woodsman, who was uniquely suited to cutting down the trees.

When the Woodsman returns home he finds that she's been there all along.

that always sounded like bullshit to me. It feels like a pretty big stretch to believe that she was just sitting around their home this whole time, and that the beast would rely on the Woodsman just never returning home even once. Besides, it's just not a satisfying story for the Woodsman.

Perhaps the LIES the frog sings of tells us that the ending isn't real. Maybe Wirt and Greg die from the train or from drowning/freezing, and they end up in The Unknown, which is a sort of purgatory (the Dante thing) where they must earn their way out. At the end, having passed their test, rather than truly returning to the living world, their refined souls ascend to heaven and the true afterlife.

Just a thought.

I think it's by far the most robust theory. Don't confuse what you want with whether or not this was the intent of the creator/writers. Remember, the Beast overtly taunts the Woodsman about how he wouldn't be able to handle returning home to that empty house. It's strongly implied that the Woodsman hasn't returned home, and that the Beast has a particular interest in preventing him from returning home.

Within the song itself the lies refer to the beauty of Autumn, and it's colors. The fact that those colors come from the leaves dying doesn't detract from its beauty.
Beyond having elements of Dante, OtGW is about how art and culture relate to death, and how art helps us overcome our fear of it. The woodsman's fear of death is what actually kept the beast alive.
It's no accident the story takes place on Halloween, which is all about making light of death.

Having the song refer only to immediate events of the story rather than the show as a whole would be an oversight.

You're leaving out "golden memories", which is what directly precedes "the loveliest lies". It would be silly to think that the golden memories refer solely to memories of autumnal beauty. I think golden memories IN GENERAL are the loveliest lies, as we tend to forget a lot of the bad and recall, with nostalgia, times past.

A frequently overlooked (probably due to being seldom-heard) piece of this is this piece of dialogue from the read/play book/record set (spoken by Jack Jones):

>"What are memories, but stories of time lost forever? Fragments of a reality we will never experience again. And as one recalls these flights of fancy, we lose ourselves in the believing of false life of our own creation. Something we seem to remember, but can’t rationally trust to be true. And so it was with Wirt and Gregory, and their descent ever further into The Unknown."

That was a bit of unintentional poetry for you.

Anyways, I thought I'd add the bit that precedes what I just posted. On the record they get on the ferry, the frog sings, then they presumably continue on their way to Adelaide's.

>As the sun went down, they reminisced about the fun adventures they had shared, and although they would miss each other very much, they knew that they’d never forget all the wonderful memories. Or would they?

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved.
In a sense the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little attention to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as one can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for free for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply publicize what the music business wants to make money with.

Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great musician like Tim Buckley, who never sold much, and commercial products like the Beatles. And rock critics will study more of rock history and realize who invented what and who simply exploited it commercially.

Beatles' "aryan" music removed any trace of black music from rock and roll: it replaced syncopated african rhythm with linear western melody, and lusty negro attitudes with cute white-kid smiles.

Contemporary musicians never spoke highly of the Beatles, and for a good reason. They could not figure out why the Beatles' songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that the Beatles were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Beatlemania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). THat phenomenon kept alive interest in their (mediocre) musical endeavours to this day. Nothing else grants the Beatles more attention than, say, the Kinks or the Rolling Stones. There was nothing intrinsically better in the Beatles' music. Ray Davies of the Kinks was certainly a far better songwriter than Lennon & McCartney. The Stones were certainly much more skilled musicians than the 'Fab Fours'. And Pete Townshend was a far more accomplished composer, capable of "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia". Not to mention later and far greater British musicians. Not to mention the American musicians who created what the Beatles later sold to the masses.

The Beatles sold a lot of records not because they were the greatest musicians but simply because their music was easy to sell to the masses: it had no difficult content, it had no technical innovations, it had no creative depth. They wrote a bunch of catchy 3-minute ditties and they were photogenic. If somebody had not invented "beatlemania" in 1963, you would not have wasted five minutes of your time to read a page about such a trivial band.

My little sisters liked it but I did have to explain to them that they were almost dying in the river and that they slipped into a different world called the Unknown. I suspect they understood that already to some extent, but since they're sheltered kids I assumed they had some confusion (and mental blocks?) going on.

They love the frog, Greg and the Schooltown Follies episode.

Their "real world" bodies would have. Given that the Unknown seems to be a place were people live, yet we see Quincy Endicott living there while also seeing his grave that you can die in the "real world" while continuing on in the weird timelessness of the Unknown.

I understand why McHale doesn't want to continue Wirt's story, and thinks it wouldn't have artistic integrity that way.
But if The Unknown is a dreamlike Purgatory between Life and Death that is influenced by the dreams and memories of the lost souls that wander through, I think the Unknown would be great as a series with a different character and a different arc each time. The Unknown could even look different each time and have new inhabitants. There's lots of room for creativity.
What if Sara or Jason Funderberker wandered in?

So how can the Unknown be the afterlife if in the tavern episode Beatrice says that the innkeeper will die someday and that when that happens she'll laugh and laugh? How can the dead die?

The Unknown is a state between Life and Death where souls rest in limbo. Clearly the souls there can die since they can turn into trees which are chopped up for the beast. There is probably a heaven or a hell that they can pass on to, but instead they reside in the Unknown. That's why Greg and Wirt are able to escape back to the real world without fully dying.

The Beast could be something like a Wendigo to go with the folky feel of the story. He's free only when someone else takes his place. That could be Wirt.

He seemed to think his daughter was in there. We can only assume the beast told him that. Why the beast didn't just keep holding his own lantern, is unknown. I guess it's easier to lurk and pounce if you don't have to carry it around. Almost refreshing to see a villian willing to win by straight out telling a bunch of lies.

Those things seem like they could be coincidences or just allusions. To me, the big clear-cut argument that the Unknown is somehow related to the afterlife or limbo is that Wirt and Greg were drowning in the "real world" the entire time they were there.

I don't think I want to know the specific details about what the Unknown is or how it works. But I do believe: 1) it's related to death and 2) it's real at least in some sense.

Because, like Wirt and Greg, Beatrice is not aware that she's stuck between life and death.

Plus when you die in the Unknown you go to Heaven or Hell. Greg almost got to Heaven when he went to "Cloud City", with all its clouds and angels, but of course he revived because he never got past the welcoming committee.

Hey, I wrote that list. I am firmly on the side of the Unknown being some other dimension, shared unconscious world, and/or limbo where the experiences of those entering shape the environment.

Aside from obvious giveaway things like the bell in the frog's belly, we have stuff like the fact that Greg is the one who heard "two old cat", while some other things relate to Wirt. At the very least they were in a shared dream, which itself is supernatural.

They're the remnants of lost souls that died in The Unknown, whether by the hand of the beast or something else. I will now list my evidence for this theory:
Auntie Whispers has many turtles. Auntie Whispers' daughter has killed many travellers. It is not a huge leap to infer that the two items are at least in some way connected.

The Beast consumes Edelwood oil to survive. When the dog eats the turtle, it bears a likeness to the beast because it has drawn its power from the same source. that is, the oil produced by lost souls.

In Greg's dream/journey, a bearded man with a red pointed hat is shown holding a lantern and following a marching black turtle. This could be a glimpse at what would have become of Wirt had he decided to become the bearer of the lantern, chasing for lost souls to consume as fuel.

If there are any better theories I'd be very happy to hear them.

Oh lawd!!!

Some have mentioned a likely Tom Waits influence on some things in otgw. The singing/music of the Highwayman is somewhat Waitsian, the Old North Wind is VERY Waitsian, and I recall speaking to someone here about a track on The Black Rider with the lines:
>There is a light in the forest
>There is a face in the tree

But I've just thought of one that hits even closer to home, from a really great track, Black Market Baby:

>She lives in a house
>Way back off the road
>There's a man with a lantern
>And he carries her soul

I think my memory was finally jogged by this post:

Not him but I think only the people who die near or because of the Beast become edelwood trees, since the Beast looks similar to that too.

I don't know, but the turtles do seem to be black like oil, and when the dog chokes on one it seems like it's totally dunked in oil, with eyes like the rainbow shimmer you get on an oily surface. My guess is turning the bodies into trees before they become turtles or skeletons is how the Beast needs to process them for the lantern, otherwise they can't be burned.

It was a troll, man, and a damn good one. The Beatles had tons of critical praise and artistic and cultural influence. This was written to sound like someone who only knew about five Beatles songs and was dismissive of them.

To bring this back to OTGW, the Beatles are considered the best rock band still because rock music itself reached a creative high point in the late 1960s. After about 1970, it still sold great but wasn't seen as the ultimate expression of the times, a form of the zeitgeist. The fracture into sub genres is a sign of this. OTGW is the best cartoon I've seen in forever, better than anything on the air now, things I really like. But the ultimate test of its power is if OTGW can inspire other animation to new heights. I think it can do that but we're in for a long wait.

Episode 1 (doesn't care when he hears something weird from where Greg is and ditches him to the wolf the first chance he gets. Then he tries to pin the destruction of the Mill on him while taking partial credit for beating the wolf), 8, and 9 are just full-on Wirt being a dickwad to Greg. He practically disowns him before the train comes along.

he was being flippant, as usual. the joke was that greg was given the coins for being smart -> greg does something stupid with the coins -> greg makes a funny comment.

in fact, this is just after wirt had told greg he did a good job getting those coins, so evidently greg fucks things up whether or not he's being insulted or complimented.

That's complete bullshit. The while point of it is to keep girls in feminine roles. Depictions of women and girls doing anything (or being) not pretty/cute/beautiful are portrayed negatively to enforce this as well. Asian cultures have very strictly enforced roles for women and those shows just go along with it.

Tumblr is so fucking stupid that they are literally fighting against the cause they are supposed to be sided with.

But the characters went off model so many times. And the animation for the most part (barring that awesome Highwayman part)....was shit. Total shit. I'm sorry /co/, I love this show, but the animation was shit. It could have been so much better. I wish it was.

>he wasn't wrong though.
The whole thing was Wirt's fault for being such a pussy, that's the whole point of the story. Everything Greg did only brought him closer to his crush and a social life in general, while Wirt kept overthinking everything and hiding due to his intense pussification.
