I only just realized the masked guy's head is mushroom shaped. Could this be Toad?

If so, I'm guessing it's the same Toad from the first movie and he's found a way to become closer to human but is probably still scaly and weird under that mask.

They said somewhere on the site that the story won't include anything from the Mario games after 1996 or so. They want to keep it as faithful as to what an actual movie sequel back in the mid-'90s would have been like as possible.
