So, I made a pretty /co/ related faux pas at a party the other day. I was doing pretty well for myself for most of the party, having real conversations and not being a wall-hugging geek.

We were playing Apples to Apples, one of those social party games. Basically one person draws a card with a category, and everybody else has cards with nouns on them, and you have to play a card that fits into the category. All the cards with the nouns had little descriptions on the bottom, sort of jokes that explained what or who the card was about.

It was my turn to have the category card. I forgot what it was, but one of the cards I got was "Batman". Now, all I said at first was "Awesome, Batman!", but then I read the joke description.

It said "What does Batman's mom say when it's time for supper? NA Na Na Na na na Na Na SUP-PER!". Now, forget the fact that this isn't very funny or clever. I read it out loud for everyone, and they all sort of laughed. But then I pointed out the problem.

"Batman's mom doesn't say ANYTHING when it's time for supper, she's DEAD."

Pic related. It's the expression everyone made during the stunned, awkward silence that fell over the room.

Anyone else have /co/ related social missteps?

Hahaha, good show anonymous.

You have lame friends. All mine would have laughed.
>> Anonymous 06/16/08(Mon)21:01 No.4615120
That's pretty funny.

But no. No, I keep to myself about stuff like that.
>> Anonymous 06/16/08(Mon)21:01 No.4615125
I wouldn't call that a social misstep. Maybe I don't understand the context in which you said it. Or maybe you said it with a weird delivery.

I mean, it's not like his parents being dead is something only an UBERNERD would know. Was this "party" a funeral for someone's mother or something? What the fuck.
>> Anonymous 06/16/08(Mon)21:02 No.4615140
I mean, c'mon... even if you don't have any comics, who DOESN'T know that Batman's parents are DEEEAAADDD!!!

Fuck, that's how the Justice League acts whenever Bats mentions his dead parents.

You have lame friends. I don't have any.
>> Anonymous 06/16/08(Mon)21:03 No.4615150
...Why is it so odd for someone to know that Batman's parents are dead? Didn't they ever see a Batman movie? Or did you like, triumphantly shout it out or something equally embarrassing?
>> Anonymous 06/16/08(Mon)21:03 No.4615151
they are lame thats funny and you dont have to read comics to know this as batman and movies about him are mainstream

I played Apples to Apples one time with some friends, and based on that experience alone, I'm positive they would have laughed too.

Same Anon here. I played Scattegories I believe with some friends, and the letter we pickedwas F. One of the categories was superheroes and I picked Forge. I picked Forge because if you pick the same person as another player, it's void and I knew nobody would think of Forge. I was silently saying fuck yeah fuck yeah in my head.

The party was mostly uber-pc/sensitive sorority girls. I was a guest of one of my housemate, so I didn't really know anyone. Somebody changed the subject quickly, and I didn't follow up, so I don't know if one of the girls moms had died or what.

I'm glad other people are surprised by the reaction as well and it's not just me.
