I say it's great, but I'm aparently in the minority of /co/mrade that wasn't expecting an action charged show, instead focusing on the characters.

The show is not perfect, as I wish characters other than Hiccup, Astrid and sometimes Stoic and Gobber would get development.

But they get screentime at least, and I get to enjoy their quirks and some new aspects of their personalities.

Every once in a while, the setting is broadened a little bit and new dragon species or behaviors are introduced.

As I said, the show is trying.

The Heather episodes were more about Astrid than Hiccup.

Fishlegs gets some mileage out of sharing scenes with Astrid and Hiccup.

Snotlout might be the resident butt monkey, but he gets the most screentime out of it, and the last episode gave some depth to his character. Besides that, his relationship with Hookfang is the most developed of the bunch.

The twins do need more love, though.

And the Twin's Zippleback (whose name I keep forgetting), along with Stormfly could use more characterization. Meatlug also, but to a lesser extent.


All things considering, the show has a better handle on stuff than people give it credit.

I've been thinking about what grimdark HTTYD would be like. How about this: Stoick and Astrid die in a coup by Alvin when Mildew and some other townspeople betray Berk. The dragons are trapped in the arena, and Alvin tries to torture Hiccup into giving him info on how to train dragons. Toothless escapes and, upon witnessing Hiccup being tortured, kills all of the usurpers in a rage. The experience (especially the betrayal) traumatizes Hiccup, who, now chief of Berk by order of succession, becomes a cynical Machiavellian tyrant who feeds political dissidents to Toothless.

I'd say every episode after 5 is good (Five is where Alvin is first hinted at, he appears in Six proper).

The last episode, and the two Heather ones I'd recomend if you ship Hiccstrid.

How To Pick Your Dragon is about Stoic getting his own dragon. You want to check that one for sure.

The first four epsidoes are kinda slow, but they set the status quo and introduce some dragons and stuff that gets referenced later on (but it's not actually vital to the enjoyment/understanding of the later episodes).
