Indeed. 2009's been great for theatrical animation in general.

Coming in October to US theaters, will be great to see on the big screen.

I can't say I really liked the Gurren Lagann movies. Or at least not hte first one (is the 2nd one even out). Too much condensation, too little emotional impact, too obsessed with being flashy, and the only 100% original content was the Yoko fight on the deck of Dai-Gurren. Even the 4 generals appearing all at once was a lot of copy and paste from the actual show.

Rebuild... Well, I wasn't a huge fan of Eva the first time around. Eva, this time with budget isn't really appealing to me much.

Okay, one one hand, cool. On the other... I'm cautious. The first Gurren Lagann movie wrecked the series' pacing, taking much of the emotional impact out of scenes. Simon manning up and decided to kick ass after only 10 minutes of 'mildly depressed' didn't have nearly the impact of the similar event in the series. I'm just kinda worried that Gainax has the wrong idea about what made the series so good. It wasn't the 'Hey guys, look at what I can do' or 'isn't this awesome' it was the emotional thing. I mean, sure, a lot of it's rule of cool, but no story's even worth telling if you can't make us really care about the characters or the events that occur to them.

The second movie is half-an-hour longer and supposedly adds more emotional impact to scenes involving Simon and Nia by removing "filler", relatively speaking, related to Rossiu or Yoko.

I hate stylized animation, but this movie managed to surpass my expectations and give me hope for independent (not owned by a conglomerate) animated features.
