  • I like RX-7s that have forced induction!
I've had a laptop for some time now and love it.  I actually used it moreso than my desktops, and as you can see in my sig I got it over 2 weeks of uptime.  One day last week, it wouldn't come out of it's "sleep" mode, which it goes into when I close the lid.  After some messing it BSOD'd, and wouldn't shut down or even hard power off.  After unplugging the power supply and the battery, it finally shut off.  I then powered it back on and it tried to boot, but said something to the nature of "no operating system found"...which is not in any way good...ever.  Then, it would no longer power on at all, it just makes a high pitch wine when you plug in the power cable...coming from the CPU area(again NEVER good).

Now, the HDD had many important files(you know, all our digital photos, gamesaves, po..er 'media' files of different sorts...).  Since it couldn't boot up, I needed to pop the hard drive in a PC to pull the files directly...well, I didn't have one on hand.  GO EBAY :D .  Fast forward 3-5 buisiness days, and the 2 adapters come in the mail(I only needed one of course, but if I ever do a laptop drive upgrade, I can put 2 in a PC and ghost if I want to keep the config the same).  Well, I put the drive on the adapter as stated and it recognized it even, but after going through the BIOS and restarting it gives me a beep error of some kind(I have no MOBO manual, and haven't DLed it yet~).  Well, even if it restarts right, it resets the BIOS setting to defaults, and when you get partways through correcting them it restarts it's self and beeps.

At this point, I removed the lappy HDD to see if that was the issue, and it still did the same thing.  I thought it had asploded forever, but this morning I got it to work finally.  I even put as much strain as playing 3D games and it did fine...I'm not sure what happened, except maybie the PSU was not able to take even one more HDD's worth of power strain(but that doesn't jive with the fact that a Geforce FX5500 has no noticeable negative effects once you're in Windows and gaming).

Eh, the PSU is just a 250 watter that is prolly not putting out fully, even.  It's reading sleightly above voltage on the 12\ -12 volt rails, but reading low on the 5 volt rail(about 4.6 to 4.8 volts).  I'm sure the voltage fluxuation is prolly out of ATX standards as well, but I have no way to test it.

[00:49] <@FyberOptic> what a sad place the internet is to deliver so much useless data
[00:52] <@FyberOptic> 5790 porns would be such a much better use, for example

Are those voltage tests while it's at full load?

Nerp, raw idle.  That's what it was reading in the BIOS.  I need to test it in Windows at idle and during strain.  I'm not sure how to induce full load since I have no watt tester, heh.  I'll just load up a strenuous 3D game demo.

By full load I mostly just meant "having everything hooked up".  4.8v isn't too bad really, but I think 4.6 might be deviating a bit far (though is prolly still plenty to power most stuff in the computer).  Then again, many cheaper power supplies will just do that (not to say yours is cheap).  Some of the super cheap ones start to drop a lot when not even near their rated values.  And some will just vary all the time for no reason.

My bios had mine listed a little above 5v last I checked.  I'd like to put a third drive in, but just because the rails seem steady doesn't mean I'm not pushing it too hard.  I just need one huger one.
