Halp
« on: September 05, 2007, 04:31:52 pm »
I don't like posting this kind of thing here, but I figured if anyone can (try to) solve this, it's anyone on this board (namely fyber ;) ).

I need some help on a personal matter. Rather, a Personal Computer matter.
I have been invaded by some sort of software that, very forcefully, tries to get me to install an antivirus software (not free) by imitating Windows. You can see my screenshots below, and how this is affecting me:

I cannot use Internet Explorer. It crashes every time. (I'm using Firefox at the moment)
I cannot access Task manager: It says Admin has blocked it (I didn't).
It set my background as a threat.
It tells me every minute or so to download software that I don't want.
Programs open slowly.

Can anyone help me? I'll answer any questions if it helps get rid of this virus. at least I call it a virus.

And I may be a complete moron, but I do not have antivirus software. :(

That last one looks like a legit Windows popup, but I could be wrong.  Plus, if you have XP service pack 2, you have built in firewall and virus protection.  It'd be a good idea to download the XP anti-spyware thing though, plus make sure you have all your updates.

[00:48] <@FyberOptic> time to download 5790 spams
[00:49] <@FyberOptic> what a sad place the internet is to deliver so much useless data
[00:52] <@FyberOptic> 5790 porns would be such a much better use, for example

Wow, sounds like you got quite a doozy for it to be locking out task manager and everything.  All of that in the last image is totally bogus.  Any program can create popup balloons.  And notice that the one window even has a misspelled word in it (donwload).  You've gotten some form of ransomware, which is what many types of spyware/adware have mutated into these days, since it makes them money.  If I had a lot of money, I'd sue all of those assholes for all of theirs.  It really is just a form of virus, and should all be illegal.

Anyway, a Google search shows you unfortunately aren't the only one, but that there's possibly some removal methods/tools that will hopefully get you back on track:

http://www.precisesecurity.com/adware-spy/aw-scx.htm

Whether that'll fix everything, I dunno, but once you at least can get the shit out of the system, we can work on fixing any residual problems.

Thanks for the replies. (I think the second screenshot is crazy too.) I'll try those methods out and see if they work.

All I can say is...wow.
AVG found 120 viruses. And half of them I recognized. Yes, recognized; I never knew what the processes were so i left them alone.
And now they are gone.
Thanks for that link FyberOptic, it fixed all of it.
If you want to lock this topic, go ahead; the problem is solved.

Awesome.  Did you have to do anything else from that page, or did AVG seem to get rid of all of it?

I did everything on the page although I believe AVG did it all, viruses stopped after the scan. I'm keeping AVG on my system, it works great. I didn't run SmitFraudFix in safe mode though, I forgot my Setup Password. It only said "recommended in safe mode".
