This is the only WoW thread that isn't a troll. Post times when you encountered an awesome person in WoW. There is a dwarf on my battlegroup (not my server) and I saw him on two occasions in the same week.

We were doing a random heroic Utgarde Pinnacle run, and I noticed this dwarf hunter with a bright red hat (looks like the one in the pic except it's red). I inspected him and saw he was decently geared, had basically some T9 and one piece of T10, decent weapon, rings, trinkets, I mean fuck, I'm not a hunter, but it looked pretty good to me, with the exception of this hat. It was some lower level green that was definitely pre-Northrend in origin. The healer asked him why he wore it and he said, to paraphrase, "I can get a drink from it and it looks cool on me. I haven't stopped wearing it since I got it." Someone tried to kick him but the vote failed. We went through the instance and he actually did really well. He was pulling decent DPS, better than me at least. He also used a lot of traps and misdirection, which I honestly never see in heroics.

Then a few days later I see him in an Arathi Basin game. I recognized him because of that goddamn red hat. But you know what? Motherfucker was ripping shit up like I've never seen before. I was guarding LM with him and another guy, and nobody was guarding BS. As we were getting attacked by a shaman, he saw Horde down there and said, "Stay here." He took away his crab, flung himself off the cliff and parachuted safely to the ground. He popped a flare, revealing a rogue, summoned his crab, and fucking wasted him. When reinforcements arrived he rode back up to the LM.

Elitists like Neeshka will say that this guy is a "baddie" just because he's wearing a shitty green, but I have nothing but respect for him. I never saw him again, though.

I was half AFK in Org when this undead rogue walks up to me and opens trade.

I had just hit 80 a couple weeks back and my gear was made of absolute shit.

I had mostly item level 200's and this was before the random instances shit.

Well the Rogue who had opened trade, put in the trade window a pair Of Combustion Bracers.

They were item level 219 which was a huge upgrade over my greens.

I whispered him a simple question mark.

He just clicks accept on the trade window and messages back.

Hit accept dude. I said really? He said, "Yeah, some times I feel like you gotta be nice to some one if you ever want to expect anyones kindness in return." I thanked him so much I couldn't fucking believe my eyes.

I've replaced those bracers since then but i've kept them in my bank to remember this guy ever since.

>> Another epic story: Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)21:30 No.58155XXX
I saw a dwarf prot warrior announcing in trade chat every fucking day around Christmas that he was giving gifts. I forget his name but he was a true bro. And he was also in shitty gear.

Around that time I remember he was saying something about a quest for anyone up for a challenge. I asked him about it but he just said to meet him in the Dwarven District in Stormwind in that big empty building. I was bored so I was like fuck it, and I went there.

He said he had a plan to take the Crossroads. He said if we came with him and helped him conquer it, we'd each get a cardinal ruby and some potions. Fuck, what did we have to lose, other than some time? Unfortunately nobody really gave a shit, so we couldn't even form a full party. It was just four of us.

We went to Booty Bay and landed in Ratchet. As we were riding to Crossroads, he commanded us to not show any mercy. Kill them all, he said, even the weak. He knew we'd attract some 80s sooner or later.

Anyway, we arrived in Crossroads and he immediately charged the guards, then charged one of the really low level NPCs until they were yelling something in Horde language. A level 20 was flagged and he shield slammed him without even hesitating. The first 80 came. We piled onto him and even though this warrior had shit gear, he was really good at controlling other players. At one point a mage was about to finish me but it was reflected off me (so I know he was talented for spell reflect) and it killed him.

More 80s came and we were quickly outnumbered, but we kept fighting. After about 20 minutes we were just getting farmed and he said we could go now. He gave us each a cardinal ruby and five haste potions each.

As I was hearthing back to Dalaran, I saw him run back into the Crossroads alone, yelling shit in character as he charged into the group of 80s.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add, the last thing I heard him yell before I hearthed was, "HAVE AT ME, HORDE FILTH!!!"

I kind of wanted to stay longer.

Huge TL;DR:

I joined during BC, as a massive noob in whites that sold blues to vendors and equipped my hunter with strength gear. I was truly the worst player you could imagine. I was invited to this casual guild, where I was given gold and netherweave bags to start out, and was run through dungeons and they basically helped me blossom. I remember going through screenshots on the WoW site at around level 30 and going "HOLY SHIT THAT PHOENIX IS AWESOME WHERE DO I GET ONE" in guild chat. They laughed, told me TK, and I told them that I'd get one no matter what. I mentioned it alot as I was getting up there in level, and was still in the now large guild by the time I hit 70. Our guild was in the top five on the server, and I watched people in envy as they raided TK and BT and the like while I was in Karazhan. Finally, I was invited to run, and it was the time of my life. We even got to Kael'Thas, and kicked his ass without a single wipe, even with me, Captain Karazhan.
We looted him...and the phoenix dropped. Server first, I come to find later. Everyone's freaking out over vent and rolling.
I roll a fucking 2. Exasperated, I noticed that the guild leader rolled a 100. Everything goes quiet, and I noticed the loot hadn't gone to him yet. I hear a "are you sure"? Before I'm given the Ashes of Al'ar. I'm FREAKING OUT, asking if it was a mistake and I'll put in a ticket. He goes, "That's the one thing you've wanted since you first joined our guild. You deserve it."
Years later I'm still flying around on it in Dalaran, and the guild has long since disbanded.

>> ORGRIMMAR GAUNTLET STORY: Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)21:37 No.58156XXX
during vanilla there was a shaman on my server who would organise these crazy events using his gold

for example, one such event was a "level 5 or under gnome run through orgrimmar". the rules were simple:
- you must be a gnome, level 5 or below
- everyone starts the run at the same time
- first one to get to thrall wins

the winner would get 1k (back in Vanilla this was a LOT) gold, second would get 500 gold, third 250 gold. there was also bonus prises for the best named gnome, etc. as you could imagine these events were quite hectic and a lot of fun

the guy also ran an item and gold transfer service. that is he would transfer your items or gold from alliance to horde or the other way around. if i remember correctly, transfers of gold was free and transferring an item cost 5g (due to AH costs)

I'm sorry, what? Gear checks are the most annoying thing on the planet. Why I remember straight tanking Byakko, Fenrir and Kirin on my BRD back in FFXI's glory days. And then they nerfed Mazurkas "provoke" effect. Then I sadfaced, sold all my gear and used only AF and cheap rings. I thought to myself, why? Still did the same job I did before. Still landed Elegy on Kirin, etc.

Then we got a NIN and PLD to do the work I did by myself. for their jobs, they should have been able to do it better than me, but just barely managed. Not because they were in AF, their AF wasn't bad. They just were terrible people who were the slowest button mashers you'll probably never meet.

Back when I played on Moon Guard, there was this one human rogue with a tuxedo. He was level 70, but he never did ANYTHING but act fancy. He had the most amazing vocabulary ever. He was goldcapped and shit, but nobody ever saw him farming or doing anything productive. Just hanging around stormwind, frequenting certain inns.

He'd purposefully go into Goldshire and just sit there, then FLIP HIS SHIT whenever some neckbeard tried to ERP with him. Funniest thing ever.

Anyway, one day, he's trolling the shit out of some transfer with the highest vanilla PvP title. Basically, he gets challenged to a duel. Everyone went outside SW to watch. The transfer was in full Brutal gear.

The rogue suddenly pulls out TWO FUCKING WARGLAIVES and rapes him in 10 seconds flat. All in his tuxedo.

I'm the one who asked you to repost, thank you for that. This is the single nicest thing I've ever heard done, it literally brought me to tears when I read it. At the time I was in a elitest guild, our guild leader was a dick and always wanted all the rogue loot passed to me (I was always top 2 dps, only competetion was a hunter, and he only beat me a couple of fights). I usually passed to my other rogue bros as I was the rogue leader, none of them were quite up to par with me but I always helped them, gave them tips, socket info, etc etc.

We downed KT pre-nerf, and it was by far the single most hardest fights in the game, to DATE (ive been through 90% of the hardcore modes in WotLK, and I can assure you none of that shit can compare to pre-nerf KT, he didnt earn the name "guild destroyer" for nothing). The fight had no room for mistake or incompetent players, EVERYONE had to be on they're toes, the entire fight.

My last memories of wow are topping the DPS charts for months, then having the guild leader's wife (who also played a hunter, was a total whiny bitch, and couldn't play worth a shit) receive all the hunter upgrades. When she finally caught up to and passed my DPS she asked smugly "Hey Anon, what happened to your DPS? It sucks now." I quit the guild and game right there. Fuck this shit. Two or three good, friendly players do not make up for a terrible game full of terrible people who are terrible players.
>> FRIENDLY CHINESE FARMER STORY: Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)21:57 No.58158XXX
Back in vanilla, there used to be this gold farmer that was at Tyr's Hand 24/7. He wasn't a dick, like the other gold farmers. Other farmers would train mobs on you and shit, this guy just stayed separate. His name was Brandyy.

I was a mage, and everytime I saw him I made some food and gave it to him. I never asked for gold, but one day he put up 400g and clicked accept. I hadn't even given him anything.

Keep in mind, this is vanilla WoW. People considered 1000g fucking MASSIVE. Many people said "fuck paying money" for epic mounts and just got to rank 11 for the PvP mounts(mounts cost the most, not the training in vanilla).

He couldn't speak english very well, but I talked to him now and then. Good farming buddy.

Heh, I had a great time on WoW, I ran a /v/ guild for a few months. It was great when we had members but life and school pretty much called everyone away, and then the influx of haters pretty much ended it. Nobody wanted to post recruitment threads because of all the nonsense. I eventually gave the guild away and transferred servers.

We had a really great time though. We just ran classic instances and helped eachother level. (This was well before the random dungeon finder, around the Ulduar expansion.) I miss those guys sometimes, I would really like to get another guild going if you guys are interested. (Horde only, no alliance faggots.)

I was riding around on my 80 Rogue a few months ago. I happened to be passing through Duskwood, when I passed by a Hunter who needed help with his Stalvan Mistmantle questline. I decided to help him out, seeing as he was in the early 20's. I helped him out a bit, and quested with him for a few hours just because. He ended up being a pretty cool guy. We ended up friending each other, and going on our ways, whispering back and forth every now and then.

Before I saw him last, I had passed him 100g. He turned it down at first saying I needed it more, but I was feeling kind, and told him it was alright. Over the next few weeks, I learned he was a cancer patient who would play WoW whenever his wife, kids, or friends weren't visiting. He claimed it was his best way to make friends for the last moments of his life. He was 24, and had a loving wife, and 2 kids.

At one point, I last saw him at level 62. After that my monthly payments had run out for a bit. I had to go about two months hiatus from WoW. I finally got back, and noticed I had some mail. It had only 2 days left until it was sent back to the sender. It was the Hunter I helped. Attached was 1,000g, and a message. "Thanks for being such a friend. I know you said not to pay you back, but I won't be needing it any more."

His character was around about one more months until his account was deleted. He hadn't logged on in over a month and a half.

>bro stories
Oh man, these get me, here's probably the best I got.
Back in BC I played WoW, my first character being a lock (awesome gnome that looked kinda like midgit hitler). I was trying to get my dam level 60 mount by soloing some dungeon in the plaguelands. I was actually pretty surprised at how far I got, a few rooms in, but it was very tedious and one thing or another would eventually kick my ass, probably would have been doable if I weren't a shit player. Then two bros somehow found out that I was in the same dungeon (I had noticed them too but figured they were busy with their whatevertheyweredoing. They invited me in, and stormed through the dungeon, setting a record time for them, if I remember right, and I got whatever I needed to get. Shit was awesome, because, though I hear it's different now, it didn't get much more awesome than a FUCKING DREADSTEED. Man that was cool, I must have spent an hour roaming around just looking at it when I finally got it. They let me join their guild, and looking back, they really did give me a lot of help along the way, though I tried to be independent. Eventually some of the real bros in that guild started dropping out from guild or irl drama, seriously we got screwed often by pugs and every low member expecting a 24/7 bodyguard. Finishing Kara took us forever, and then I think we had to work with another guild to do Gruul's only getting to send a few people, dealing with dkp, and other shit that tore us apart. To the time I eventually quit WoW though, after almost every bro was long gone, I stayed in that guild and tried to help in honor of them.

From what I hear, Lich King turned WoW into utter shit, is there any chance that Cataclysm might help to fix this? I might be having some free time and stuff in the next half year to year, and I wouldn't mind a type of gaming that consistently keeps me involved.

I was leveling my first ever Night Elf in Ashenvale ( A warrior), I was level 23. This was a PvP server, Boulderfist I believe.

I was killing furblogs for that one quest where you sit on a mound and fight off waves of them. I was doing pretty good but I was too low for the quest and was taking quite the beating after a couple waves. Health low, I pop my last potion and hope for no crits against me. It was then that I saw it, out in the distance, an Orc warrior (Rholk) running towards me full bore.

"Fuck my life" I thought as I was pretty sure this guy was going to gank my ass and make me start over. Sure enough, final wave, this orc charges and totally messes me up and kills the mob I needed. He lol's and dances on my corpse, normal behavior for dirty horde.

I run back and spawn behind a tree, the orc sees my body go skeleton and begins running around trying to find me. Hmm, he's level 24, I got a chance. I charge him from behind some bushes and we fight. I end up killing him and eventually he comes back. We go back and forth for a while killing eachother then finally I log off to go to bed.

This is where most stories would end, but not this one.

A couple days later I'm in Arathi highlands killing trolls around a lake. Who happens to be killing raptors nearby? Rholk, that dirty orc. I charge his ass and he defends himself a bit too well and ends up killing me. We end up going back and forth again for a while until he ends up leaving.

A few more days pass. I'm in Ferelas. I'm killing Yetis and I hear the "Woosh" of a charge. Fucking Rholk! Now it's just funny, we keep running into eachother. But this time, things were different. We only killed eachother a couple times, but then ended up questing around eachother, not engaging in any PvP. I then realized what was happening. We were watching eachother's back. If an ally would come by, I would tell him to leave Rholk alone, and he ended up saving my ass from more than one horde. This unspoken alliance blossomed for many more days. We ended up questing the same zones, Felwood, Winterspring, Un'goro. We just kept running into eachother. We'd cross paths and lol, /wave, and then hang around eachother killing mobs.

This continued into Outland (This was way before WOTLK). We kept passing eachother by in Hellfire, Zangamarsh and Nagrand. People would ask why we didn't PvP and it was just impossible to explain to them our odd relationship.

But, one day, things changed. We were questing in Blades Edge, and this damned Mage kept killing Rholk for around 2 hours straight. I kept telling him to stop, but he'd always reply "Red = dead, noob". Eventually, Rholk logged out. I felt terrible, I couldn't do anything to help him.

I didn't see Rholk for a few days, then a week, then a month. We're we just missing eachother? I looked him up on the Armory. He was gone. Rholk didn't exist according to it. And then I saw it, there he was, on a low population PvP server. He transfered. I couldn't do it anymore. Somehow, having Rholk around made the game 100% more fun, and without him, I just couldn't play anymore. I quit for 6 months after that.

Rholk, wherever you are, or whoever you are, It's me, Tentarek the Night Elf Warrior. It was good times my friend, the best.

Instead of a story where somebody was nice to me or I was nice to somebody, I'll share a tale of me being an asshole to some stupid fucker on Warcraft.

This guy is running around, asking in trade if anyone will pay for his epic mount. He wants "540gs" A plan forms in my head. I tell the guy that sure, I'll pay for his mount, but he has to entertain me first. I bring the guy to Stranglethorn Vale with a friend of mine, and we jump into the Gurubashi Arena, where I proceed to destroy him, go "lol jk bro," resurrect him, destroy him again, resurrect him, with him repeatedly complaining and then going back to thinking I'll give him the money.

After I do this about ten times, I have him run back, telling him I'll give him the 540 gs when he makes it back. When he resurrects, I macrospam him with the letter G exactly 540 times.

A couple of weeks back when I was leveling my druid in Boomkin, I met this guy who leveled at the same pace as me. An affiction warlock who kept killing me and killing me and killing me and killing me every time we met.
Most of the time I could never get him below 50%, but one day he was out in the open in storm peaks and I land right next to him with a star fall. The splash from his voidwalker kills him in 3 seconds and I go FUCK YEAH and it's the best day ever... So he soulstones. Fuck no.
Well Storm Peaks is a place full of fun falls. Druids have Typhoon. I love druids and warlocks go splat.

I have never met a single nice person in WoW. Since I started playing in 2005 I have encountered nothing but selfish people that are only out for themselves. I've had friends that were only my friends because I am a good tank. I've had people start drama with me and divide the guild e.g. when I was awarded a thunderfury binding after a 2 hour debate by officers. This caused the guild to divide and I was asked to leave the guild by the GM.

I bounced around from guild to guild after, each one worse than the last. People would throw hissy fits over loot, caused drama. I tried to keep to myself, never spoke to anyone or got involved. I got kicked for reasons such as "Not being a contributing member" when I didn't want to run the resident guild whore's alt through instances for gear. People treated me like a piece of property, as a tank "the guild gears you up so you have to do what the guild says."

I eventually bit the bullet and server transferred. I became a bitter individual and started to only look out for myself, using people just as they used me for personal character progression.

Brogall is still around but currently suffering from a lack of interest. Once people started hitting the level cap and gearing up they logged on less frequently and now pretty much the only thing to do is raid now and then, so a lot of people have just given up on it.

That's not to say we don't still have people on regularly, but not as much as I would like, since the fun of being in Brogall is getting to hang around cool bros instead of the normal gay WoW community.

One thing that really bothered me was that I was interested in raids and stuff, but my dps was shit, perhaps because I'm not really good at vidya (but how could I possibly have gone wrong with keeping dots up and shadowbolt spamming?), compared to people who would just walk in full of pvp gear. PvP is fun sometimes but I really hated how the hardcore pvp ers would dominate pve as well, which was what I liked to play, has anything changed/will change with Cataclysm about that?

I'll always have the memories of some of the people I have met throughout the game. Hell, some of us still hang out or play games online.

I remember when I was just a wee little dumbass pre-BC and tried to kill someone in WPL near Chillwind, and ended up getting farmed by a couple of Horde in a few minutes. After getting a little frustrated, this guy whispered me saying "I've got it, don't worry". I watched the 3 horde dancing on my body die 1 right after another as the stealthed Rogue that whispered me annihilated him. I inspected him and he was in almost full T2. He just waved and stealthed again as I got up and ran.

Fun stuff.

hmmm guess I'll bite.

I was in TOC with a close online friend of mine since BC when the Dps trinket dropped ( the caster one) and with me currently being Elemental I rolled for it and won. I had a feeling as soon as I got it though that a large amount of the guild were unhappy. Why would a pug win something they've been trying hard to get for months. But I was already thinking up a storm of what to do with it. Their top Mage had been going for it forever and he happened to be friends with my friend, irl buddies so you say. Suddenly I get a whisper " you know he would totally respect you if you gave that to him" in which I replied " I was thinking the same thing." I opened trade with him, and handed him the Trinket and when he asked why I replied "It didn't seem fair to me that even though it was my main in the instance, Elemental was my offspec. I thought you could make better use out of it so here you go."

He thanked me and I pretty much made the good list of " this person will pass loot to people if they need it"

I still pass potential upgrades and such, and maybe I'm a pushover. But in general, I just wanted to be nice due to how I was being treated in my current guild

best part is they invite me occasionally to their raids now

Shit sucks for guilds these days.

I was an MT for Naxx progression in a guild last year, and my guild leader had a paladin healer who'd also roll for tanking gear even if that was his offspec.

On our 4th or 5th clear Thaddius drops epic trinket.
I needed and won by a large margin, but GM still takes it anyway.
I say I had enough of this and quit, and the entire guild falls apart after a week, being unable to find a decent tank.

My little brother is a hunter freak. There's some good Hunter PvPers out there, but my brother is a complete freak when it comes to PvE OR PvP for it.

He's made two hunters, one for collecting exotic pets (he's tamed Arcturis, Skoll, Gondria, King Krush and crab for pvp), and another for pure PvE progression.

I'd usually scrutinize him for wasting time and making two of the same things, and convincing him that it's just pixels and he'd only really need normal pets, he's somehow managed to convince me to level a resto druid with him - and I've not had this much fun since the vanilla days.

Oh man, in Vanilla WoW, on Stonemaul server (i think) I was questing as a rogue, probably in my high 50's, in the Un'goro Crater when I ran into some Alliance paladin (also high 50s). I tried to run past him but he Hammer of Justice'd me and began to pound the shit out of me. I got off the mount and we exchanged blows for a good thirty seconds before I noticed that he was being jumped by one of those giant dinosaurs.

Sure, I mean the guy was a dick for attacking me first when I didn't attack him, but I decided to be a bro and help him out of this. He tanked and I DPS'd, at one point he was low on health so I evasion-tanked the dinosaur while he healed. Once it was done, we /high-fived each other and went our separate ways.

I used to see him in Stormwind all the time when I would lurk around.

Back in the first season of TBC I had just hit 70 on my warlock and had zero idea how to play. I was fully clad in greens and blues and was looking for a 2v2 partner.

I met an undead mage through random skirms and I grouped and asked him to make a team with me. He was better than me but didn't really talk much. I quickly found out he was Chinese and spoke virtually zero English. We were super serious about arena; we learned to communicate by saying simple one-word commands like "rogue", "help", etc. It was a horrible system, but we hit that sweet spot where we could predict each others actions and work together perfectly.

Before every rated game, we would play 5 skirms. Every single time, but my Chinese partner never complained. I was a clicker and had no idea how to play Warlock, but my Chinese friend never left and always cheered me on in broken English after every win or loss. We weren't very good at first, but we eventually won more than we lost and had fun.

One day I got invited to another 2v2 team by someone geared and left the Chinese guy without saying a word. I eventually geared up and hit 2300 a season later, but I never had the same fun I did with my Chinese partner. I miss him. :(

>I can get a drink from it and it looks cool on me. I haven't stopped wearing it since I got it.

That's what the fucking spirit of the game should be!
If the community was like that I would still play.

Instead it's HUURRR LINK GEARSCORE AND ACHIEVE, DEATHBRINGER'S WILL RESERVED.

I remember an occasion when Wrath first came out and I started leveling through Borean Tundra on my Night Elf.

I recall doing the last quest for those PEHTA guys. Had to kill an elite with about 60k health I think (apparently now this quest gives an item that wipes most his health). I was having a lot of trouble doing it, the guy did massive hits and I had poor health. So after my 2nd death, a femcow balance druid comes along, /smiles at me and /points at the guy. I attack him and she helps me out, he dies and that was the first time a Horde player did something nice for me.

I then noticed she was going to kill the guy too. I /thanked her quickly and /pointed at the guy. She started attacking him, I vanished, ran off and /rofl'd at her as I mounted up and she died.

Good times.

What are the bandwidth/cpu/ram requirements to a run a private server?

How good is the emulation software?

How much maintenance does it require?

I used to hang around outside starting areas handing out 16 slot bags to new players.

But if I need to constantly watch the server or pay a shitload for bandwidth I can't.

I'm gonna play the role of the bad guy in this thread and be the reality filter.

As awesome as the stories are, you won't find people like that much anymore, if anything it will be pretty rare. The community nowadays is a casual shitfest where gearscore is all that matters, and the people are either whiny children, or whiny adults, both of which are also some of the biggest assholes ever. I wish that wasn't the case but it is. Unless of course there is some magical server where the community is the greatest ever and bros are abound (which I highly doubt). Face it, WoW is now a shell of its former self in both community and the game itself.

I have a problem with it because Facebook is such a cheapass network. It's like Bnet 1.0 was.
My dad got malware that totally took control of his search engine and was not uninstallable without the help of virus scans and regedits from an App. The whole system may have built a nice community, but it just feels like some backwards site from the 90s that still tricks you into downloading bad shit with your good shit.

I was thinking about it. Then I remembered the heroic grinding. No thank you. I have the most fun leveling, believe it or not. Once you hit 80 the game becomes work.
>> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)23:27 No.58165XXX
>>58165392
Heroic grinding is a minute part of this game now since they made it easy as hell.
If you're a healer it'll take you 5 day after you hit 80 to get enough gearscore to do the 10 man end game raids.
You can complain about nothing fun once you've progressed with a raiding guild.
