Valve decided to give you a way to turn your unused Steam trading cards, backgrounds, etc into games by converting them into gems and either making new trading cards or bidding to try and get games every 45 minutes, starting at a certain point on the 15th.

Then some guy found a way to dupe these gems, shit infinite amounts, make trading cards, and flood the market with both cards and gems alike.

Now Valve deleted gems all together and we have no fucking idea what's going on.

The marketplace was really good near the beginning, not many people using it, people knew values, and they were stable.

They opened it up, and the floodgates opened because every BR or ruskie that ever downloaded a game could undercut by 90% to sell instantly, but everyone would start using that price and it would just plummet, which is why cards for brand new $60 games are ~$.10, and online games where you pay $x per card are like $1.00~ per card.

That said, the limit to $400 for an item on the marketplace killed most big trade. Most people still use keys or paypal. Just sold a stattrak fade gut knife for 300 keys. and that was still a huge loss.

Part of the event was a thing that let you use gems to craft booster packs for all the games you own that support cards. Gem sacks which contained 1K gems each were going for 3 cents a piece so people were selling cards and shit they had in their inventory, buying up gems by the boatload, and then throwing all of those gems into boosters to then turn around and sell all the new cards or boosters for maximum profit. So far, I ended up turning 80 cents of loose change in my account into $4 with over 60 cards still to be sold.

I spent the first half of this year playing CSGO religiously for fucking weapon skins and crates. Ended up spending probably ~$50 on keys over the course of 5 or 6 months and ended up getting a handful of valuable weapon skins that totaled to about $125. Wasn't really worth it since I could've just used that money to buy other games, but the wallet funds I did use to buy games in the summer sale and whatnot, so it wasn't a total bust. Ultimately got burnt out on that game because I got to the higher tiers of competitive play and the hackers were driving me fucking insane. Then again, I guess putting over 400 hours into something over the course of a few months will do that.
