tbh the big twist for me wasnt even the year, but that the unknown was, like, a separate.. world. I got such a strong impression at the beginning that they'd literally hopped over the garden wall (the intro sequence with all the little foreshadowing bits, the boat, etc, gave me the impression that WAS their village) and they seemed to be dressed right.. so the whole time I was wondering why magical things are so strange to them if theyre a normal part of this country theyre in.
i bet this is what it was like when people first saw the wizard of oz movie, after reading the book with its normal 'it's just another country and they left by balloon' ending. i kinda like when adaptations change endings. planet of the apes did that nicely.

Here's a question I had: when is Wirt/Greg's "modern" time?
I saw a lot of people saying 1980s because of the cassette recorder, but that wasn't the feeling I got.
Firstly, what would the point of putting it 30 years ago specifically be? It doesn't seem to add anything that poignant to the story's message.
Also, Wirt just seems like the kind of guy who would still have a cassette recorder now, after they're mostly dead. The fact that Sara who seems more well-adjusted doesn't have a cassette player adds to that.

I kind of assumed it was a dream for most of it, but when there was the bit with the bell inside the frog, that gets rid of that.
I ended up thinking that the Unknown is just a physical place in another "world" where they went because of their near-death situation. I also think that the story was vague enough to allow most interpretations of what the Unknown is to be semi-valid.

I just finished this. My pals were talking about it as it aired, decided to see what was up by catching one of the middle episodes.
Cue me pretty much ragging on the character writing and animation the whole time. I didn't like it. But I saw the reception it was had, so manned up and gave it a run through from start to finish.
It's... okay, I guess? I enjoy the plot twists in 9/10 and what they represent more than the show itself. Like the ride wasn't necessarily the greatest for me but it had a reasonable amount of payoff at the end.
So, yeah, I think it's not bad. Which means it's already league ahead of most of CN's other offerings.
It's probably a tad overrated, but a large and overzealous fanbase will do that.

I mean the Wizard of Oz (film), and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are beloved stories that turn out to be dreams, but when you look back on the events it it makes sense.
While there's plenty of hints to say they did go somewhere, the Unknown has very dreamlike qualities.
I think people got annoyed with this cliché because some series used it to tell lucid stories while cutting out on dealing with the consequences. When Wirt wakes up in the hospital he's clearly changed by what he at least thinks has happened.
Personally though, I think they almost died and went into a limbo world between life and the afterlife before making their way back.

Something quick I noticed: in "Potatoes and Molasses" there's an animal playing the sousaphone, which originates around the turn of the century. (1890s)
Now, I don't think that's a fair way to determine when the Unknown is. My point is more that it doesn't come from any one specific town. Schooltown Follies (E3), otherwise, feels really like the Antebellum South, which is ~50 years earlier.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Stories involving brothers always get to me, and the grim yet whimsical world was fun to watch. It had a really nice balance of light and dark. The structure was a little more episodic than I had expected though (a different adventure each episode more or less).
