I would like to have a thread about this, but I don't know what to say about it, other than it was perfect
What were the hints that gave away the plot twist?

Wirt asking for a "ride" home and asking for a phone.

I fucking loved this show and hope the team behind it gets to make another one.

I replied to one of the talkback threads when it was airing (a week after the digital release) and saying that, since Wirt asked for a phone, it had to take place not before 1876. Some anon replied, "Yeah, we've talked about that. Seems like an oversight on the part of the crew in an otherwise tightly written show".

I never had the chance to thank him or her for not spoiling the twist.

Really great.

My personal favorite cartoon of 2014, though it was shorter so maybe better to say my personal favorite animated thing of 2014?

Regardless - it was really, really fun.

The phone and high school were the two giveaways, yeah.

I kind of assumed the phone mention was a mistake (I saw the post >>68393153), and that saying he was in high school was just an oversight on the part of the writers who didn't want to find a more appropriate way to describe his age.

The fucking twist, mang. The fucking twist.

tbh the big twist for me wasnt even the year, but that the unknown was, like, a separate.. world. I got such a strong impression at the beginning that they'd literally hopped over the garden wall (the intro sequence with all the little foreshadowing bits, the boat, etc, gave me the impression that WAS their village) and they seemed to be dressed right.. so the whole time I was wondering why magical things are so strange to them if theyre a normal part of this country theyre in.

i bet this is what it was like when people first saw the wizard of oz movie, after reading the book with its normal 'it's just another country and they left by balloon' ending. i kinda like when adaptations change endings. planet of the apes did that nicely.

Here's a question I had: when is Wirt/Greg's "modern" time?

I saw a lot of people saying 1980s because of the cassette recorder, but that wasn't the feeling I got.

Firstly, what would the point of putting it 30 years ago specifically be? It doesn't seem to add anything that poignant to the story's message.

Also, Wirt just seems like the kind of guy who would still have a cassette recorder now, after they're mostly dead. The fact that Sara who seems more well-adjusted doesn't have a cassette player adds to that.

I've read it's 1990's because the cassettes are parodies of songs that came out in 1991 and 1993 or something like that
But yeah, I thought the same, not having a cassette player in those years doesn't add up
Perhaps it was because youth has changed so much this scenario would be weird these days, even for cartoon standards

Most likely it was more nostalgic for the writers setting it in a time they grew up in. I don't think the show was necessarily written for children, or even young adults though it does have a lot of material that would appeal to them. It seemed to me like it was truly an adult show for adults with adult themes, just presented in such an endearingly childlike charm.

And then the fish fisherman catches one at the end, if that has any significance.

I never really went with the idea that the Unknown was limbo.

I always kind of pictured limbo like a bus stop, where people just wait until they finally get to enter heaven. The Unknown doesn't strike me as "people idly wait until they move on somewhere else - most of the people there seem happy where they are.

I kind of assumed it was a dream for most of it, but when there was the bit with the bell inside the frog, that gets rid of that.

I ended up thinking that the Unknown is just a physical place in another "world" where they went because of their near-death situation. I also think that the story was vague enough to allow most interpretations of what the Unknown is to be semi-valid.

the weird thing to me is that in episode 9 everything screams 'small town'.. the neighborhood, the aesthetic of the highschool stuff, the general layout.. the graveyard with nearby river and woods..
yet when we come back in episode 10, it's the city from Clarence. a medium-to-big city.
did they just rush wirt and greg to the nearest hospital which happens to be in a way more urban area?

my friends quite after the third episode because they hated the animation, the story, and Greg. One of my friends said he thought the artstyle was halfway decent but the animation was garbage, and another absolutely hated all the voice acting.

usually I'm annoyed by Greg's character type in other shows but you're right, I guess with Wirt's pessimistic ramblings in the first few episodes and after Beatrice's separation with the group, he's like a shining beacon of innocence in a forest of beasts, gorillas and sadness.

But mostly gorillas.

I read somewhere that they represent some kind of trio where
>Greg is optimism

I think the last of those 3 is kind of sketchy, but whatever it is, it seems to work. I didn't end up disliking Wirt - I felt sorry for him through most of it and then felt vaguely heartwarmed.

I mean, it's a musical cartoon miniseries thing. By definition, every character is granted the ability to improv short cheesy songs. "Potatoes and Molasses" isn't exactly the most thought-inspiring deep song, either.

It's just simple rhymes like a real 8 year old might think of, albeit somewhat slower.

Also, if it's any comfort, we later see him struggling to finish "Adelaide Parade" even after he's been working on it.

Convinced one of my friends to stick with it but even she just quit at episode 7. None of my friends so much as cracked a single smile the entire time. Kept hearing about it from /co/, caught the first two episodes on Cartoon Network, forget to tune in the next couple of days. Kept meaning to watch it. Then, one by one a bunch of my friends start raving about it. Finally, as a party at my friend's was finally winding down he pulls up Over the Garden Wall for like 7 of us.

I flipped out the whole way through, as did basically everyone else. It was a hell of a good time.

I just finished this. My pals were talking about it as it aired, decided to see what was up by catching one of the middle episodes.

Cue me pretty much ragging on the character writing and animation the whole time. I didn't like it. But I saw the reception it was had, so manned up and gave it a run through from start to finish.

It's... okay, I guess? I enjoy the plot twists in 9/10 and what they represent more than the show itself. Like the ride wasn't necessarily the greatest for me but it had a reasonable amount of payoff at the end.

So, yeah, I think it's not bad. Which means it's already league ahead of most of CN's other offerings.

It's probably a tad overrated, but a large and overzealous fanbase will do that.

Mainly Writ mentioning High School and the "anachronistic" was he and Greg speak compared to everyone else.

I just wanted it with my brother recently, he liked it a lot. Almost saddens me I'll won't get another cartoon this great in a long as while, like when A:TLA ended.

Honestly the sibling rivalry is a really nice angle to come from, and having a younger brother I did not value particularly during my childhood, I can very much identify with Wirt's frustrations. It was a little eerie in fact, how much his relationship with Greg mirrored my own, though I have since of course learned the value of my own brother.

My issue with that is that purgatory always struck me as a "waiting idly to be sent to heaven or hell" place.

The people who live in the Unknown don't seem to be waiting to go somewhere else. They seem happy where they are - especially after the Beast leaves.

if the unknow is a place the religious allegories crumble.
If its a state then its just a continuation of the neutrality of life.

Which ones?

The "Dante's Inferno" ones always seemed like a stretch to me.

There is the 2 cents needed to ride the ferry, but that would indicate that it's hell, which I think doesn't fit with the rest of it. Again - after the beast leaves, most people seem pretty happy.

The dog ate the turtle whole, including the shell, Auntie Whispers sick the turtle out of its shell. Maybe the shell is evil, but the turtle isn't. Maybe because pulling a turtle out of its shell kills it, if you eat a live turtle you'll become a monster, but if it's dead you can eat it. Or the turtle's only affect dogs. Or the candy and turtle combination or (even the candy alone) was what corrupted the dog. Whispers could already be some sort of monster so the turts can't corrupt her because she is already corrupt. I mean, there are so many possibilities that it's really impossible to tell without any more details.

I don't get all the hype over this TWIIIIIST that /co/ found so shocking. There were atleast 4 mentions of things that let you know the time period

>phone
>can i have a ride
>i'm in high school
>etc.

Also in all the pre-release interviews/trailers they literally told you these are MODERN fairytales. I know not everyone that will watch this saw all the pre-release material, but I know /co/ did because it was constantly posted.

Also, Wirt was reasonably weirded out by EVERYTHING that seemed at all mystical/old-timey. WHY DID /co/ THINK THE FACT THAT THEY'RE FROM THE MODERN WORLD WAS A TWIST GODDAMMIT PAY ATTENTION

The only twist I felt while watching was when Wirt realized the lamp housed the demon's soul. I mean it was fairly obvious and all when you look at the whole, but Wirt getting it so quickly was a nice and (for me at least) unexepcted boon to his character.

Also, phones and high school aren't exclusively modern stuff. They may not have been around in Antebellum America, but they both existed by about a century after.

Yeah, I didn't think this was antebellum but more turn-of-the-century/Gilded Age/Victorian/Edwardian or something. Around the time of The Wizard of Oz. They had phones then, early cars (and asking for a ride could refer to a horse or a carriage or something, that's pretty vague), and while high school was rare it certainly EXISTED.

Excluding 9 and 10? That makes it easier.
I know a lot of people don't like it but probably Chapter 8. I've watched enough old cartoons to appreciate the first half and I adore the songs.
But I admit, it's the second half that has me hooked. It's heart-wrenching and probably left the biggest impression on me when airing. The wait for the next day was painful.
After that it's probably chapter 5. I like the Manor setting and John Cleese and Fred are hilarious.

>her pleading for Wirt and Greg's freedom JUST as they come in the door to see her apparently conspiring with Adelaide so they can be mad at her is pretty cliched.
I've heard people complaining about this but I can't say I agree. It's not like it's a misunderstanding, Wirt was pissed because she lied about getting them home so she could trade their freedom for the scissors and that's exactly what she'd been doing up till then. Now they're even more lost.
Considering what he's like with Greg, Wirt may not have listened to her even if she had explained and apologised.

I think the Unknown is just the afterlife, not hell, not heaven, the limbo itself would be the lost people in it, who aren't supposed to be dead yet, and people who are already established there are just dead for real

The general rule for "It's all just a dream" seems to be it's ok if it was actually dream-like.
I mean the Wizard of Oz (film), and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are beloved stories that turn out to be dreams, but when you look back on the events it it makes sense.
While there's plenty of hints to say they did go somewhere, the Unknown has very dreamlike qualities.
I think people got annoyed with this cliché because some series used it to tell lucid stories while cutting out on dealing with the consequences. When Wirt wakes up in the hospital he's clearly changed by what he at least thinks has happened.
Personally though, I think they almost died and went into a limbo world between life and the afterlife before making their way back.

To me I think this was because they were actually dying rather than sleeping. Also OtGW has a lot of other stuff in it besides the reveal. A lot of use of old American folklore and language, it's parallels with The Divine Comedy, references to animation history and opera, symbolism out the hoo-hah. Though a lot of people calling it a masterpiece also love the characters, songs, jokes, how folksy The Unknown is. Shit's got a lot to offer.

I mean, they're really the only ones who talked like modern day people in the show from ep 1-8. Beatrice too, maybe. The point is that it all took place somewhere in the boys (mostly Wirt's) subconscious state. In the beginning we see the people of The Unknown are troubled, scared, and lost because that's where Wirt was emotionally, after he resolves their problems bit by bit, he fights his was way back in the real world and saves his brother. In the end we all of the people in his head at peace just as he is.

If you read up in the thread, you'll see that it's not firmly agreed upon that it was 80s/90s.

In my opinion, the fact that Sara doesn't have a cassette player while Wirt does is actually indicative of it happening in a modern time.

Really: is Wirt not the kind of guy who would still have a cassette recorder in the 2000s? Sara wouldn't have one because she was normal, or at least socially-adjusted.

I hesitate to put it in 2014 (or 2015) because of the conspicuous absence of cell phones, but I'm inclined to say it takes place in the 2000s.

I think this is interesting, and there are some connections between Dante's and OTGW (the Wood of Suicides is a huge one), but I think trying to connect a each level of hell with an episode is a bit of a stretch.

Something quick I noticed: in "Potatoes and Molasses" there's an animal playing the sousaphone, which originates around the turn of the century. (1890s)

Now, I don't think that's a fair way to determine when the Unknown is. My point is more that it doesn't come from any one specific town. Schooltown Follies (E3), otherwise, feels really like the Antebellum South, which is ~50 years earlier.

Langtree's design is also based on Gibson Girls.

The Unknown is a mash-up of different time periods and locations. Lot of Colonial New England-y stuff, the Dixieland-ness of the frogs, and 1890s.

The pacing was bad and it probably could have benefited from being 10 half hour episodes instead of fifteen minute episodes, but it wasn't all a dream everything that happened in that world was as real as their home. The frog still had the bell inside of it at the end. Also the whole journey is to help Wirt realize he's being a little shit and unfairly blaming all of his problems on hIs brother.

I rewatched it during the marathon last night, and I had a few questions, if anyone has any ideas:

What's the significance of the leaf blowing against fence in E2? They really seemed to emphasize it, but I didn't get what it meant - literally or symbolically.

Also, is it significant that there's a pile of coins at the bottom of Endicott's fountain? Is it just saying "People throw coins in here for no reason like in the real world." or does it have another significance?

Guys, as someone who works with Pat McHale, he is indeed planning a second series.

Over the Garden Wall: Electric Boogaloo
Synopsis: The Beast reincarnates into the real world. Using the power of dancing, he begins conquering the world's nation. A middle-aged Wirt and teenage Greg (set in the year 2035), being the only living beings to know the Beast's existence, are the only ones who could end his reign of terror.
